In this episode, Ian and Cathy speak with Teresa Andrews, Director of Fund Development at EPIC Behavioral Healthcare, and Emma Benoit, a suicide survivor who shares her story to inspire hope and change.
In August, INK! and EPIC partnered with the St. Johns County School District (SJCSD) and local mental and behavioral health providers to host a county-wide screening tour of Emma’s documentary film, “My Ascension.” INK! and EPIC collaborated to bring Emma back St. Johns County to share her experiences and her story of hope.
“My Ascension” spotlights the inspiring story of Emma as a 16-year-old high school varsity cheerleader who attempted suicide and her road to recovery and healing. Emma now travels the country to tell her story, break the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health, and inspire hope in others.
Recent research has shown a significant increase in mental health issues among teenagers, particularly girls, and a rise in teen suicides.
INK!, EPIC, and SJCSD collaborated to highlight the importance of suicide awareness and prevention with multiple screenings of My Ascension at locations across St. Johns County in August to provide opportunities for students, families, and the St. Johns County Community to come together in support of youth mental health and suicide prevention.
September is Suicide Prevention Month
As September is Suicide Prevention Month, this is an episode you don’t want to miss. Listen to hear Emma and Teresa debunk some common myths about suicide and mental health. They also offer advice to teens and adults who may be struggling with mental health or suicide ideation or concerned about a friend or loved-one who is struggling.
Emma and Teresa remind listeners that:
- It’s okay to NOT be okay.
- Healing is not linear.
- Seeking help is not a weakness.
- You are NOT alone.
- Suicide can affect every one of us.
- Talking about suicide does not cause someone to commit suicide. Rather, talking about suicide opens the door and holds space for someone who is struggling to talk about their feelings and challenges.
