In the newest episode of The INK! Podcast, Episode 23: How Mentors Change Lives, hosts Ian MacDonald and Jim Wheeler explore the powerful role mentors play in helping students build confidence, navigate challenges, set goals, and see new possibilities for their future.
Mentoring is about much more than offering advice. It is about showing up, listening, encouraging, and building a consistent relationship that lets a student know someone believes in their potential.
The Power of Showing Up
At INK!, we see the impact of mentoring firsthand through Take Stock in Children St. Johns, our college and career readiness program serving deserving students throughout St. Johns County.
Take Stock in Children pairs students with caring volunteer mentors who meet with them regularly throughout their middle and high school years. Along the way, students also receive college and career readiness support and the opportunity to earn a Florida Prepaid college scholarship upon successful completion of the program.
But at the heart of Take Stock is the relationship between a student and mentor.
Mentors provide encouragement, perspective, accountability, and—perhaps most importantly—consistency. Over time, those conversations can help students recognize their strengths, work through obstacles, develop confidence, and begin imagining what is possible beyond high school.
Small Moments. Lasting Impact.
You do not have to be a teacher, counselor, or education expert to make a difference as a mentor. You simply need a willingness to listen, encourage, and invest your time in a young person.
A conversation about a difficult week at school. Celebrating a good grade. Talking through a future career. Encouraging a student who is frustrated. Reminding them how far they have already come.
These moments may seem small, but together they can have a lasting impact.
That is what makes mentoring such an important part of INK!’s mission to invest in kids, empower potential, and connect our community with St. Johns County public schools.
